The sea slapped waves against the rock he’d sat upon so long,
The moon made trails of silver that led to the lighthouse stair
As the Watcher sat and waited,
Waited – watched and waited –
The Watcher sat and waited, though nobody else was there.
Nobody cared that the Watcher stared non-stop around the clock.
Adorned in socks of seaweed and a coat of shaggy hair,
The Watcher sat and waited,
Waited – watched and waited –
The Watcher sat and waited, though nobody else was there.
Why was the Watcher waiting for a hundred years or more -
For a boat to come and find him from the distant rocky shore?
Or a long lost lighthouse keeper to climb down the crumbling stair?
The Watcher sat and waited,
Waited – watched and waited –
The Watcher sat and waited, though nobody else was there.
The mermaids cried with pity and the fierce sea birds screamed,
The lighthouse fell into the sea as the Watcher sat and dreamed.
Lobsters, crabs and barnacles made homes in his shaggy hair,
Still the Watcher sat and waited,
Waited – watched and waited –
The Watcher sat and waited, until just his ghost was there.
His shipmates promised they’d be back again - they made a pledge.
They said he had a job to do as Lookout on the ledge,
And the Watcher took them at their word, and to this very day,
The Watcher’s ghost is waiting,
Waiting, watching, waiting -
The Watcher’s ghost is waiting, for a ship to come this way.
The Watcher knows he may not leave until his work is done,
Or someone takes his place upon this rock in rain and sun.
Will YOU free the Watcher, will you stay here night and day?
The Watcher’s ghost is waiting,
Waiting, watching, waiting -
The Watcher's ghost is waiting, for you to come this way ...
